River cruising is sailing towards a record-breaking year as travellers seek to discover destinations on small ships with fewer guests onboard.
AmaWaterways and European Waterways are just some of the lines seeing bookings rise by up to a staggering 45 per cent as families look to enjoy an intimate holiday together.
The classic combination of boutique ships, gentle pace of life, and the ease of going ashore for longer means that more than a third of ocean cruisers are taking their first river cruise in 2023.
With an estimated 30 million people ocean cruising each year compared to just one million on the rivers, the industry’s fastest-growing market is predicted to explode this year.
Epic sailings
As more rivers open up again, travellers want to see more of the world for longer. The river equivalent of a world cruise, AmaWaterways’ 46-night sailing through 14 countries from June 1, 2023 almost sold out immediately, even with a starting price of £21,596pp. Two more Seven River Journeys Through Europe cruises have now been added, setting sail on April 20 and August 24, 2023.

Family-friendly cruises
After years of living in bubbles, families now want to travel together, and lines have responded with some exciting multi-generational river cruises.
As well as the ancient Pyramids, Uniworld’s family-friendly Egypt cruise offers football with local children and sand dune boarding. The 11-night Splendors of Egypt & the Nile cruise factors in more sedate experiences on a traditional felucca, while younger family members are encouraged to share a gift with local children.
