< >The stunning SS Sphinx is set to make its debut on new Nile itineraries
Uniworld has unveiled images of its newest ship SS Sphinx as it makes its debut on the Nile river in Egypt.
The luxurious river cruise ship features a private dining room, an al fresco restaurant on the upper deck, a swimming pool, massage room and 42 suites, all of which have French balconies.
The ship has been decked out with locally sourced Egyptian artwork, fabrics and hand-carved furnishings.
The ship’s ceilings were hand-carved in locally sourced blonde wood; the carpets are inspired by Egyptian geometric shapes of the magnificent Pyramids; the banquettes were handcrafted and upholstered in fabric sourced from a local fabric company; and the top deck is filled with blue-toned furniture with tented drapes inspired by the ancient Egyptian barges.
Menus reflect the destination that the ship is sailing through with options including Egyptian beef liver, sweetcorn soup, fatteh, mulukhiya, Egyptian bread, hawawshi and more.
Ellen Bettridge, CEO and president of Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, said: “As Egypt continues to be a top trending travel destination, we’re overjoyed to set sail along the famed Nile river and provide an unmatched look at the destination aboard our striking new Super Ship, the SS Sphinx.”
She added: “We’re excited for our guests to experience the ship as it fully embodies what they love most when sailing with us – exquisite design and experiences they won’t find anywhere else. Over the past few years, our team poured their heart into sourcing the design aspects, spending weeks at a time searching the souks and bazaars to find local artisans and family-owned furniture businesses to collaborate with and bring the true spirit of Egypt to life on board. Everything from the artwork to the ceilings to the ship’s bow was thought out and sourced by the local community.”
The ship operates the 12-day Splendors of Egypt & The Nile itinerary, including four nights in Cairo at the beginning and end of the trip. Highlights include a tour of the Temple of Karnak, Horus, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Egyptian Museum. The itinerary leads in at £5,129, including flights with a one-way business class upgrade, all meals, premium spirits and wine, offshore excursions, tips and wi-fi.
Having recently doubled the UK sales team, Shane Riley, Virgin Voyages’ associate vice-president international sales, tells us what’s behind the new cruise line’s trade tagline “Brilliant To Do Business With” and why agents (or first mates) should work with them.
