Green shoots of recovery

The government has finally revealed its initial green list allowing the, albeit limited, resumption of international travel.

Outside the tourist hotspots of Iceland, Israel and Portugal, the list has provoked more questions than answers (although the answer to most is, ‘no, you can’t actually go there’). But it’s a start – even if the absence of regional or island-specific destinations suggests that the government hasn’t been listening to the travel industry over the past year. In fact, the irksome comments by Grant Shapps regarding travel agents being a thing of the past suggest the transport secretary doesn’t understand the travel industry full stop.

Still, any developments that allow travel to begin again are welcome. It’s hard to believe that, before the month is out, both international holidays and domestic cruises will have resumed. Among all the frustration, that alone is enough to make us smile.
